Theirs was a shared desire to free Western, Oriental, and African percussion instruments from their traditional roles and
give them a more modern repertoire. On the advice of Pierre Boulez, these six precursors started up the now famous Les Percussions
de Strasbourg, giving their first recital in 1962. The creation of a new repertoire followed, with works from composers such
as Messiaen, Xenakis, Stockhausen, Serocki, Aperghis, Ballif, Cage, Dufourt, Kabelac, Māche, and Donatoni.
